Every Thursday night for the last year I’ve met with a special group of girls for a young women’s Bible study. These are mostly girls who attend my church, Lobatse Baptist. The Bible study is a chance for discipleship - helping them grow in faith, spiritual wisdom and maturity. It’s also a time for Christian fellowship since many of these girls don’t have much opportunity for that outside of our time together. I’d like to tell you a little bit about each girl so that you will know how to specifically pray for each one and so that you can put a face to the name when I send out specific prayer requests. Thank you for lifting these precious girls up! (If my hair looks funny in this photo it's because some of the girls decided to try to plate it :-)
TLHALEFANG is a senior in hight school this year. She is working hard in school hoping to pass her senior exams so that she might have a chance to go on to university. Tlhalefang is the “bubbly” one of the group - she always brings laughter. You might recognize her photo from an earlier entry in December when I went to stay with her family in the village of Pitsane for a few days.
PONO is the first of all the girls that I formed a friendship with. Probably because she used to live just down the street from me and would come visit everyday! She is 15 years old and just starting the 8th grade. She is a beautiful girl who gets a lot of attention from the boys, but is learning to stand up for herself and say “no!”. She recently moved out the nearby village of Molapowabojang with her mother which means she still communtes to Lobatse everyday for school. Because of this she is still able to attend Bible study every week even though she isn’t able to make it into town for youth meetings or church.
OAKANTSE is 20 years old. She finished with school after the 10th grade and now lives with her aunt and uncle working as a nanny for their two small children. This is sometimes a difficult job for her since it means she is confined to the house much of the time and often has to miss Bible study, youth meetings or church because of her duties. Oakantse really enjoys the opportunites that she does have for fellowship. She has a sweet spirit and desires to grow in knowledge of God.
JANICE joined the group just this last fall. She was a new student at Phaphamang (the high school that I temporarily taught at last year) and felt very out of place having no authentic friendships. Janice actually attends the SDA church with her family, but joins us on Thursdays for fellowship and additional opportunity for Bible study. She is 16 and in the 10th grade.
KEMO is younger than the rest of the girls, only 12 years old. She is my neighbor who lives across the street and never misses a week; she loves spending time with the older girls. I’m praying that their maturity and our study of the Word will help Kemo to grow in knowlege of right and wrong.
MARY’s family moved to Botswana from Ghana several years ago. Her mother is a strong spiritual presence in her life and has raised her daughter and other children in the teachings of Jesus. Mary just began the 11th grade. She is extremely bright and does well in school but struggles with finding friends who will be a positive influence in her life.
THATO is 15 years old and in the 10th grade. She joined the church through the services that the Mississippi College team did here last May. Thato is an incredibly bright and friendly girl. She enjoys learning about the Bible and has a real desire to grow in her relationship with God. She lives with her older sisters and nephews and neices since both of her parents passed away about 5 years ago. Though she sometimes struggles with this situation, she is a strong girl who knows her hopes and dreams and is determined to see those things accomplished.
